IBM’s cloud based analytics have reported that 2011 holiday sales increased by a whopping 7.5 percent over 2010. “This past December, consumers remained committed to finding the best online deals, whether through their PC or mobile device,” John Squire, chief strategy officer for IBM Smarter Commerce, said in a statement. Retail: An Industry Worth Saving!

November 17, 2011

A recent study commissioned by the National Retail Federation illustrated just how important the retail industry is to our countries economy. 24% of jobs in the United States are directly or indirectly supported by the retail industry. Retail accounts for 2.5 Trillion dollars of America’s GDP, and 17% of national labor income is directly or indirectly generated by retail. Many political pundits may theorize that if retail is dying then so be it. After all, this is America where the strong industries thrive and the weak go the way of the Dodo. However, we at MTI Commerce believe that traditional brick and mortar retail is far from dead, it simply needs to evolve a little.

The problem in retail today is is that mom and pop retail shops haven’t caught on to what the big boys have known for years, and it is quickly putting them out of business.

Multi-Channel sales are the key to thriving in retail. It is the saving grace of the retail industry, and everyone who is in retail should feel blessed to have it. Don’t believe us?

Chloe Rigby of InternetRetailing.com projected that the department store Debenhams’s online sales had risen 71.9% in just one fiscal year.http://www.internet retailing.net/2011/09/multichannel-sales-up- by-more-than-70-at-debenhams/

Economists at Oxford Economics projected that traditional retailers have lost around 500 million dollars because they neglected online sales. http://www.guardian.co.uk/business/2011/sep/19/olline-sales-retailers-morrisons

In 2010, web sales accounted for 33% of total revenue at some of the  top brick and mortar companies, read more here: http://www.forbes.com/2011/06/21/apple-jcpenney-retailers.html

If you are a small to mid sized retailer and want to explore the possibilities of online sales, explore some of the affordable options and give your bottom line a little more black ink before the holiday season.

Obama missed a great opportunity with small business

September 12, 2011

To create jobs, Obama had to do a little more for small business. In my opinion he did about 50% of what I would have expected him to do to turn this economy around and create jobs. The 50% that he did correctly was to cut payroll taxes for employees and employers.

His plan works great for 20% of the largest organizations in US, such as GE, IBM, HP, etc., Large corporations who have a tremendous amount of cash available to them so that they can cover the payroll of new employees.

Small business owners who have been fighting with this economy the last few years are worried about making their payrolls Friday. They are worried about paying their electricity bill and Internet bill just to operate. Many are worried about paying their rent on time, and

President Obama is telling small businesses: go hire a new employee, pay the payroll, hope and pray that the economy is going to turn around and your business will make money, therefore you can save some money on your taxes.

I have over three decades of experience working with small businesses, and I strongly believe that no small business would take that risk. They simply don’t have the money to take that risk.

The 50% that he missed is that he should give businesses of 20 employees or less a one-time $10,000 for each employee they hire to help offset the cost of the training period for that employee.

That 10,000 dollars will either pay somebody’s salary for 90 days or would subsidize a person salary while the employee is being trained to be productive.

If the small business has survived in this economy, it is a great indication that they still have faith in this country and our free enterprise system and still believe their businesses will succeed and definitely will take a chance on expansion if they get some help. I believe this business owner and every business that I have worked with over the years will take on new employees knowing the government is subsidizing the employee’s salary during the initial 90 days until he/she becomes productive. That would be a major boost to the economy and the small business.

President Obama meant well. I believe that he wants to help small business, but he doesn’t know how, and I believe the main reason is neither him nor any of his staff members have had to run a small business and had to survive this long recession we have been in.

I intend to explain to President Obama how he can save this country and get every small business to hire at least one new employee, but I am only one person, I need your help to get this message out to President Obama. During this next week President Obama is focused on job creation, as well as the Senate and House of Representatives. We have a tremendous opportunity to help save our country and put Americans back to work.

Imagine if every small business hires 1-10 new employees, how high could the job number growth go?

On-line sales is helping merchants increase sales and profit

July 27, 2011

In a recent article titled “Why the Web has Won” author Rachel Ryan discusses why online sales have eclipsed traditional in-store retail sales. In today’s marketplace the high price of gas as well as our society’s internet-centric mindset have led to the colossal growth of online sales including eBay and Amazon. These websites offer a quicker and easier alternative to conventional retail, and most important they are not handicapped by geography. The web has essentially created a borderless business world which opens up a huge global market to even the smallest retailer. If you are a retailer and you are still hesitant about getting involved with online sales think about how many customers you are reaching per day now, and how many you could be reaching with the help of the internet. MTI’s new multi channel retail management system “Brick ‘n Click” makes this transition to online sales easy and a guaranteed success. Brick ‘ Click allows you to manage your retail store as well as selling on your own website, and taking advantage of eBay auction and eBay stores therefore increasing your sales and profitability.
